Amphibian Crossings
Volunteers have been out 5 times this spring helping amphibians cross a busy road in Nashua to get to their breeding sites. Thank you to all volunteers, especially Jesse!
These amphibians migrate to their breeding pools on warm (>40 degree) rainy nights. These small animals are often hit by cars as they attempt to cross busy roads. Carrying a salamander across the road so that it can continue its life is an amazing feeling.
We need more folks to help us help these small animals. Please comment and send a direct message with your email address if you are interested and able to help out.
Helping involves carrying these small animals across the road in the direction they were heading. We also keep count of the number of individuals of each species that we help which contributes to a community science effort.
This is a busy road and this work is not suitable for young children. Safety is paramount and reflective vests, flashlights, and headlamps are needed.
If you think you might be interested in helping in Nashua please take a look at the training materials available on the Harris Center web site:

Please read and follow the Harris Center’s safety tips.
If you’re interested in helping and you don’t have a reflective vest we may be able to loan you one. Just let us know. Contact cc@nashuanh.gov.
